Shaylen | Sing-play classes for children

I first met Shaylen in a music class I taught for three- and four-year-old's at a local Montessori School. What immediately struck me about him were the sophisticated questions that he would ask during class. He was quite clear about not accepting answers that did not make sense to him — answering him was a genuine challenge I appreciated.

Several years later, when his parents asked me to teach him piano, I was thrilled. It quickly became apparent that he had perfect pitch, and that he memorized very easily which seemed to be natural gifts, along with spelling and math. He was interested in astronomy and liked Harry Potter.

We have now been working together for about eight years. His family is supportive of his music, upgrading his instrument from electronic keyboard to grand piano. He also has taken up the cello, which he plays in the local orchestra. Shaylen has become very fond of J.S. Bach; when I asked him why, he talked about the patterns that he saw in the music and how they engage and challenge him.

What happens in a music lesson? | Award Winning Music Teacher

All music making that is led by the ear, and singing has a flow and ease that is deeply rewarding to the student, as well as to the listener. This is especially true when the student is thinking of giving his music to another person, as a gift. Both of these principles are embedded in my approach to teaching music.

Each lessonorganically develops as, I adjust what they are learning based on information that I get, using many of the methods listed below.

I will typically begin by asking what types of music theylike to listen to and who their favorite singers are.I will then go and listen to them myself if I have never heard of them, which is likely as there is so much music available. I suggest new pieces of music for them to listen to, or even better to watch on YouTube and find out what they like or dislike about the songs, pieces of music.I really like my students to play music that they have a connection to and they often bring in music that they want to learn. This encourages a collaborative approach to the lessons.

How making music can help people living with Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s

Music touches us in profound ways, and while many of us enjoy listening to music, it is the activity of making music that has the most powerful effect on our wellbeing. The Sing-Play approach makes learning how to do this an easy and rewarding experience. We have so much music inside of us just waiting to come out.

Most adults currently living with Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s will have grown up in a significantly more active musical environment. Many more people were engaged in music making, in their local communities, through participation in local orchestras, chorus, church choirs, as well as playing in dance bands. Despite having Parkinson’s or Alzheimer’s, they will possess a huge reservoir of music that they have heard which makes it very easy to develop.

Find An Alexander Technique Teacher New York | Pain Management

Lessons in the Alexander Technique teach us how to stop and notice what we are doing to ourselves in response to a stimulus. This could be a thought, a sensation, or an emotion, often they are all connected. When we learn how to stop and notice, choices open up to us on how to respond. Over time applying this skill allows us to live a life of increased peace and ease.

But what takes place during an Alexander lesson begins with increasing our awareness. An individual cannot learn to solve a problem unless they first learn how to “stop, think, and then act”.

Cost: Consultation $125. (90 minutes)
Lessons $105. (60 minutes) Sliding Scale.

Alexander Technique Teacher Hudson Valley | Pain Management

The Alexander Technique teacher does some of the same things, that is, she observes with her eyes what movements you are making. But mainly she feels with her hands what you are doing. The process is not in fact so localized, but rather her hands act as the terminals of a neurological circuitry between your body and hers that helps her to recognize with her more finely tuned apparatus what is going on in yours. Different distributions of muscle tension give characteristic patterns of strain or ease. When muscle fibers contract, pulses of energy are given off. Relaxed muscle is quieter. Recognizing the best mix of quiet and noisy muscle in a body is the equivalent of recognizing from experience the optimum consistency for a cake mix, or the qualities that render a sonata more musical.

Using her hands to bring your attention to different parts of yourself, the teacher guides your musculature towards a new consistency. She uses some verbal instruction, but mostly she is showing you with her hands where you are holding where you shouldn’t be and where you are not holding where you should.

A good pair of Alexander-trained hands gives you a feeling of load shedding. Lengthening and widening gives you an experience from where you can discover what you habitually do that pulls you down. You learn how to tune in to your body so you can collect more reliable information from your proprioceptive and kinaesthetic senses. The teacher’s aim in tuning in to her pupil’s body is the same as that of the tennis player who is acquiring the fine co-ordination that will hit the ball plumb in the middle of her racquet every time.

Alexander Technique Lessons for Pain and Stress Management | Judith Muir

Exercise and physical activity, reports the National Institutes of Health’s MedlinePlus, are good for seniors and nearly everyone else, including endurance routines for better breathing and heart rate, strength exercises for stronger muscles, flexibility programs to stay limber and balance training to help prevent falls.

And yet, while fall-related injuries send more than 2 million seniors to the emergency room each year, it’s a fear of falling that causes many seniors and others with physical limitations or balance issues to avoid exercising, even while it can improve balance and overall fitness. One way to minimize worry while working out is by doing so while sitting in a chair or holding on to one.

Judith Muir, an Alexander Technique movement specialist and teacher based in Verbank, said chair exercises can help people with stability issues and physical limitations due to age or disabilities, regain their balance and improve their mobility and flexibility.

Help Yourself by Learning Alexander Technique

The Alexander Technique is a unique self-help approach that teaches people how to do things with more ease and freedom – from sitting in front of a computer or texting to playing the guitar or dancing. Regular application can help the student recognize and prevent poor postural habits that can lead to pain as well as underperformance.

Unlike therapies or exercises, the Alexander Technique teaches people to gradually improve the way they look after themselves in all their waking hours – both at rest or during activity. Through the Alexander Technique, the pupil becomes more and more autonomous, able to develop new strategies to do things with greater ease and often, greater enjoyment. As healthy postural support and an overall sense of focus and calm become more established, people are more able to let go of tensions and unproductive efforts they may previously have been unaware of.

Alexander Technique for Accelerated Healing | Alexander Technique Teacher

Back pain is a common condition managed in primary care and one of the commonest causes of disability in Western societies. Drugs and surgery are the traditional methods to deal with pain.

For over a hundred years lessons in the Alexander Technique have taught students how to activate the principles that govern human functioning. The genius of Alexander’s discoveries, is that we all can learn as adults how to recapture the ease and freedom of movement so beautifully demonstrated by young children.

It can be used to accelerate recovery from surgery or injuries caused by accidents. Alexander Technique works holistically. It not only helps alleviate physical suffering but can also help to improve overall health, both physically and psychologically.

Alexander Technique in Six Easy Lessons

The tension mix is felt by the teacher’s whole body which in turn counteracts the wrong pulls with messages from her own better balance. Like many things that are evident in life nobody really knows quite how it works. But experience confirms that when the hands of a body that is opening out – or, in Alexander language, one that is “going up” – are placed on the muscular wrapping of someone who is shortening and narrowing, they stimulate it to release and open out. The experience can feel much like relaxing but without collapsing into a sagging shape. It would seem to be a sort of recognition response similar to the one that spreads smiles or yawns through a group.

Alexander Technique Hudson Valley | Judith Muir

The Alexander Technique is an educational method for improving mental and physical wellbeing. It teaches us how to recapture the ease, and freedom of movement that we enjoyed as young children.

Its basic premise is that the relationship between the head and neck is crucial to balanced posture and ease of movement. We all have this as children, but gradually lose it in response to the stresses and strains of adult life.

Through regular one-on-one lessons, students develop awareness of unconscious patterns of body usage that are counterproductive to optimal wellbeing. Using gentle touch and verbal instruction the teacher shows the student how to change these patterns. This gives an experience of ease and freedom that leads to a long-term improvement in psychological and physical functioning.

Alexander Technique for Improved Performance | Judith Muir

You know millions of people today really want to improve the way they look, and as a result spend a lot of money on their clothes, cosmetics and at salons. Yet, most people would agree that one of the most attractive qualities of a person is the way they sit, stand and move – or in other words, their posture.

However, Alexander Technique can help you to achieve good posture as you learn new ways of sitting, standing, breathing, and moving that reduce stress on your body and in turn, will allow you to perform all your daily activities with greater ease and efficiency.

The Alexander Technique exists to help people identify their own harmful postural patterns, and especially patterns that hinder free and easy breathing.

Why not try this out for yourself by enrolling alexander lesson today??

Alexander Technique Classes New York | Alexander Technique to Improve Balance

Lessons in the Alexander Technique teach us how to stop and notice what we are doing to ourselves in response to a stimulus. This could be a thought, a sensation, or an emotion, often they are all connected. When we learn how to stop and notice, choices open up to us on how to respond. Over time applying this skill allows us to live a life of increased peace and ease. We are less at the mercy of richochetingaround like a ball in a pinball machine, from one thing to another.

F.M. Alexander refined his own awareness of his reaction to a stimulus, i.e. that of recitation, to such a degree that he noticed his neck stiffening. This in turn caused a cascade of tensions and compression. Stiffening his neck, pulled his head back and down, and compressed his spine. This was the original cause of him losing his voice onstage during dramatic recitations, and solving this problem led to the development of the work that we now know as the Alexander Technique. This was over one hundred years ago and lessons in the Alexander Technique are continuing to teach people how to take charge of their lives.

But what takes place during an Alexander lesson begins with increasing our awareness. An individual cannot learn to solve a problem unless they first learn how to “stop, think, and then act”.
